Santiago CUCULLU
USA / Argentine

Born in Argentine in 1969
Lives and works in Milwaukee -- for more on the artist
Medium: Installation -- Image of the past artworks
Period of Residence:
September 3, 2004 - December 21, 2004
About the Work:
I have become very interested in using everyday elements to describe a current state of being and a local history as transmitted through found elements. Small objects and fugitive moments that are generally thought as being devoid of meaning can be mined. This causes a shift in the way we interact with a space of time and place. I would like to develop a series of sculptures that can be left for people in public and then make drawings of them.

Lives and works in Taichung -- for more on the artist
Medium: Installation, Sculpture -- Image of the past artworks
Period of Residence:
September 17, 2004 - December 15, 2004
About the Work:
I plan to install the work that reflects my experience during the residency. I am very interested in the variation of light and shadow. I use glue to model a lot of stalactite forms that will be attached to objects in the room. They will be presented with a different feel from control of light. I would also like to collect things from daily life here and combine them into my work as new materials. I wish to let viewers have a special visual arts experience under the aura. Then, at the same time, the collective community memories should be gradually called out.

I usually use elements that refer to power in forms of objects and sculptures. Now, being in Japan for the first time, I am taking interest in the appropriation of Western ideas in modern Japan, as well as the
foreign residents and communities in Japan. I hope to manifest my thoughts on these ideas with photographs and video.

These new projects are related to a long-term project called “School,” which will be continued next year in Mexico. I would also like to find out about the alternative education programs in Japan today. How does it work in relation to the changing society? How are ideas and thinking being re-constructed / re-thought in relation to knowledge and education? I plan to do a school workshop in relation to my project.
